1) NASA changes the scheduled closest point of the Cassini Flyby
NoFlyby received a netletter from Russell Hoffman of the Stop
Cassini Homepage that the scheduled closest point to Earth by Cassini has
been changed to 137 W longitude and 23.5 S latitude over the South Pacific
Ocean. Dr. Ross McCluney suspects that the change is probably due to the
refining of the date, time, and orientation of the Earth during the flyby.
Dr. McCluney explained that estimates many hundreds of thousands of miles
away have a degree of uncertainty, and as the probe gets closer, these
estimates are refined and become more accurate. This Wednesday is NASA's
last scheduled "trajectory correction maneuver" before the flyby.
Please write to NASA/JPL (cassini@jpl.nasa.gov) and ask about this
change and what Countries are now at greatest risk.
The following letter was sent by Jonathan Mark requesting more
information from NASA.

Subject: closest approach point and time (path) of cassini earth flyby
Re: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/cassini/msnstatus/cassguide.html
at the referenced page, it says:
"Cassini's closest approach to Earth occurs at 137 W longitude and 23.5 S
latitude, over the south Pacific Ocean."
Was this closest approached point to earth recently changed?
What is the time expected for Cassini to reach this point, (date and time),
and where is the flight path scheduled to go over on earth during the swingby?
I hope to receive your response soon.., by Monday morning, if possible would
be great.
Thanks for your help in advance..

2) I Like Ike
The atomic bomb explosion on Hiroshima has been justified by many,
including President Truman, who ordered the attack. Yet, most perplexing to
comprehend, is the second bomb coming so soon, in three days, shattering
lives and the city of Nagasaki. Why couldn't diplomacy and negotiations been
given a chance to succeed to end the war, without such civilian-human
suffering?
President Dwight D. Eisenhower expressed his concerns about the
Military Industry Complex during his Farewell Address to the Nation in 1961.
NoFlyby used one of the following sentences at the end of its news release
on the military-Cassini connection, "The FORCE Behind Cassini."
http://www.nonviolence.org/noflyby/alerts/18n.htm . Here are some more
excerpts from:
President Dwight D. Eisenhower, January 17, 1961
Farewell Radio and Television Address to the American People
"This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large
arms industry is new in the American experience. The total
influence-economic, political, even spiritual-is felt in every city, every
state house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the
imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its
grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so
is the very structure of our society.
In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition
of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the
military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of
misplaced power exists and will persist.
We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our
liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted only
an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of huge
industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and
goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

4) August 11 Cassini Day Vigil
This is a busy week in the cosmos. First, the total solar eclipse on
Wednesday, August 11, 1999; then on August 12 and 13, the Perseid meteor
shower peeks with 50 to 150 shooting stars per hour. Then, just like a
movie, Friday, August 13, the "day of destiny," a significant time marked
down in an ancient Aztec stone calendar; plus planetary alignment "grand
cross" configurations and predictions through the ages, but the most bizarre
event of the week may go to NASA's trajectory correction maneuver. On August
11 NASA plans to aim Cassini 729 miles from Earth when the spacecraft is
traveling about 11 miles per second with 72.3 lbs (32,8kg) of radioactive
Plutonium on board. The Cassini Day Vigil on August 11 is to take an inner
direction to help ourselves realize and awaken from this nightmare, learning
to care for our planet Earth with better ways to gather knowledge, power and
true security.
