A. June 24, 1998 Press Conference at the UN

June 24, 1999 is the date that NASA has scheduled to direct the Cassini space probe to make its second and final swingby of Venus, hurtling the probe that is carrying 72.3 lbs (32.8 kg) back toward Earth at the rate exceeding 42,000 mph (64,000 kph). We are marking the pre-anniversary of this proposed event by holding a press conference and rally at the United Nations in New York City.

The Press Conference will be held between 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon.

Tina Bell, Director of the Women's International Leauge for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), Metro, NY (212)533-2125 has applied for a rally permit for the Eiser wall, opposite the UN for after the Press Conference. We hope that as many people as possible can attend and/or help us invite the press and public.

Currently speakers include Karl Grossman and Michio Kaku.

Jonathan Haber will read the "Sign-on Statement" that has been signed by numerous organizations and individuals.

B. Announce Global Network:

Good news from Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space

The Global Network now has its own e-mail address (globenet@afn.org) and a new snail mail address & phone:

PO Box 90083
Gainesville, Fl. 32607
352/337-9274)

After years of generous support and subsidy from the Florida Coalition for Peace & Justice, the Global Network will now take off on its own.

To get on their e-mail list, please send write them directly.

The Global Network was founded in 1992 to serve as an organizing clearinghouse to prevent the nuclearization and weaponization of space. Each year they have held meetings at key space facilities throughout the U.S. and in Europe. They will announce the establishment of their web site by the fall of this year.

C. August 18 - International Awareness Day

A part of the NoFlyby strategy is to raise consciousness before the Cassini Earth flyby. August 18, 1998 is one year before the Earth flyby. Please start thinking and organizing to raise consciousness of this event and what is sure to follow. Karl Grossman recently received a report from NASA showing that 13 additional plutonium-fueled space shots are possible in coming years. About half involve very small amounts of plutonium -- in RHU's for landers, etc. -- while others involve space probes and RTGs and pounds of plutonium. The related article is posted at http: It shows what might come after Cassini. And considering the 13% accident rate, inevitably there will be an accident, unless we can change the course that NASA and the military are headed. Our aim is with Abolition 2000 and a nuclear free millennium in space and on Earth.
