Editor's Notes:

This issue contains some inspirational news, and about a progressive agenda to transform the USA, and help maintain and expand freedom and democracy in Venezuela and around the world. Take note: the Democrats are registering more new voters in Florida than Republicans in recent days, showing a trend. This is before the Michael Moore video/DVD release of "Fahrenheit 9/11" and who knows what else may happen? It is time to maintain and increase actions to make sure a clear majority is present to stop another stolen election. Meanwhile, the critical election in Venezuela is set for tomorrow, Sunday. [Late Note: 8/16/04 CHAVEZ WINS!] Item 1 includes a letter of support from Former Democratic Presidential Candidates Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rep. Dennis Kucinich for Venezuelan President Chavez, which includes their apologies for the US governments' attempts for a coup d'etat of this democratically elected leader.

The last item is on an action alert for a peace process for Israel-Palestine Peace. Settlements in the middle of an occupied territory, where Palestinians are denied basic freedoms, is only a recipe for more terrorism and injustice for everyone. This alert has to do with a BINGO Hall financing such operations, and what you can do before a vote to extend a gambling licence on August 19th, which has been used to finance "strategically placed Palestinian real estate for Jewish settlers and supporting militant anti-peace organizations." Flyby New endorses all efforts in support of a peaceful co-existing Israeli and Palestinian state, which would do more to end world-wide terrorism than any of the Bush past, ongoing, or planned wars.

"War paralyzes your courage and deadens the spirit of true manhood.
It degrades and stupefies with the sense that you are not responsible,
that 'tis not yours to think and reason why, but to do and die,'
like the hundred thousand others doomed like yourself.
War means blind obedience, unthinking stupidity, brutish callousness,
wanton destruction, and irresponsible murder."

Former Democratic Presidential Candidates Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rep. Dennis Kucinich Announce Support for Venezuelan President Chavez; Political Leader

Thu Aug 12,12:27 PM ET
To: National and International Desks
Contact: Eric Wingerter of the Venezuelan Information Office, 202-347-8081

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Jesse Jackson and Dennis Kucinich (news - web sites) were joined by actors, historians and others in sending their support to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, just days before he faces a historic vote on the future of his administration.

Noting the accomplishments of the Chavez administration to improve the lives of Venezuela's impoverished majority, the joint letter expressed the signers' "hope and expectation that, on August 15, you will once again win an electoral mandate from the Venezuelan people to be their president."

Signed by a diverse sampling of well known Americans, including the Reverend Jesse Jackson and Congressman Dennis Kucinich, television star Edward Asner, and best-selling author Howard Zinn, the letter decried the role of the United States government in financing the opposition movement in Venezuela, including participants of a 2002 coup d'etat that briefly ousted the democratically-elected president from power. The signers pledged to heal the strained relationships between the United States and Venezuela.

Despite Venezuela's vast oil wealth, nearly 80 percent of the country lives below the poverty level. President Chavez has expanded opportunities for all Venezuelans by using oil revenues to finance new schools, health clinics and national nutrition programs catering to the poor majority. In the past year alone, more than one million adults have been taught to read.

The president's term has been marked by fierce opposition from Venezuela's former ruling powers, including the 2002 coup and a national management-led oil strike that crippled the country's economy. This Sunday, the Venezuelan people will vote whether to allow the president to finish his term. Recent polls indicate that the majority of Venezuelans will once again vote in favor of their president.

The American letter is the latest in a series of solidarity statements from well-known figures around the world. In July, a group of 69 Latin American intellectuals, artists, and Nobel laureates signed a letter titled, "If I were a Venezuelan, I would vote for Hugo Chavez."

------

August 12, 2004

Dear President Chavez,

We are writing to express our solidarity during this important moment in Venezuela's history. It is our hope and expectation that, on August 15, you will once again win an electoral mandate from the Venezuelan people to be their president.

The world knows that you are achieving something remarkable in Venezuela: you are investing your country's vast oil wealth in ways that benefit everyone, not just small minority of well- connected elites. Over the last year your government's literacy campaign taught one million Venezuelans to read. And today, millions of others are benefitting from the governments investment in job training, small businesses and health care.

We are disturbed by our own government's interference in your internal affairs. The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a group funded by the U.S. Congress, has financed radical opposition leaders in their efforts to cut short your term. Some of the individuals funded by the NED participated in the April 2002 coup attempt against you.

Polling done by both the Venezuelan government and its opposition shows that you will defeat the recall referendum on August 15. We have every expectation that on August 16 Venezuelan relations with the U.S. government will begin to improve.

We are committed to doing what we can, as U.S. citizens, to heal those relationships and encourage Congress and the White House to see Venezuela not only as a model democracy but also as a model of how a country's oil wealth can be used to benefit all of its people.

Sincerely,

Reverend Jesse Jackson, Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Dr. Howard Zinn, Edward Asner, Dr. Saul Landau, Naomi Klein, Doug Henwood, Dr. Blase Bonpane, Liza Featherstone

- - CIA Contingency Plot to Overthrow Chavez?

CIA executives Gathered in Santiago de Chile
Revealed in Contingency Plot to Overthrow Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez Frias

Venezuela Headline News, August 9, 2004

Venezuela state-owned news agency VENPRES is quoting an El Mundo de Madrid (Spain) report that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is set to put a contingency plan in motion in the (likely) event that President Hugo Chavez Frias wins next weekend's Recall Referendum.

The Madrid newspaper says that the White House strategy is to avoid a regional expansion of the President Hugo Chavez Frias 'Bolivarian Revolution' which is seen by Washington D.C. as a direct step into the kind of socialism espoused by many European nations and envisaged in the United States if John Kerry wrests control of the White House from the Bush 2 administration this coming fall.

El Mundo says the CIA plan appears to concede a Chavez Frias victory next weekend "for good or bad" and that Langley spooks are already working on a strategy to "neutralize" Chavez Frias by fair means or foul. CIA under secretary for southern hemispherical affairs, William Spencer, has been drafted to Santiago de Chile to analyze the "Venezuelan situation" with CIA country directors from Colombia, Ecuador, Brasil and Peru. Spencer is reportedly convinced that Chavez Frias intends (no matter how fanciful) to create two centers of "revolutionary focus" in South America in preparation to overthrow Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Velez and Bolivia's Head of State, Carlos Mesa.

- - Kucinich Launches Progressive Dems of America

"what America will become"

Berkeley Daily Planet
Edition Date: Friday, August 13, 2004

[Excerpt]

Kucinich Can't Stop Campaigning, Launches Progressive Dems of America
By CHRISTOPHER KROHN Special to the Planet (07-27-04)

BOSTON — The air inside St. Paul's Church next to Boston Common was sultry on Monday, laden with east coast humidity and heat from national progressive politics. United States Rep. Dennis Kucinich from Ohio and several featured speakers including Reverend Jesse Jackson, James Zogby, President of the Arab-American Institute, Margaret Prescod of Pacifica's KPFK and co-coordinator of the Global Women's Strike and actors Mimi Kennedy and James Cromwell kicked off four days of political dialogue.

The presidential aspirations for one Dennis Kucinich have ended—he endorsed John Kerry last Thursday night in Detroit—but the campaign lives on. Kucinich joins dozens of national figures this week in a series of "social forums" discussing almost everything: bringing the troops home, restoring Jean Bertrand Aristide to the presidency of Haiti, creating a universal healthcare plan, endorsing gay marriage, supporting Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. The agenda goes all the way to defining, in the words of Zogby, "what America will become." This new organization is called PDA, or Progressive Democrats of America, and most of the issues raised by the progressives in Monday's two-hour opening forum aren't in the Democratic Party platform.

This was the first of nine such events during this convention week for Kucinich and the 300 supporter-entourage he has brought with him to Boston. The list of scheduled speakers for the week reads like a national progressive who's who all-star team: Prof. Angela Davis, former California State Sen. and ‘60s icon Tom Hayden, U.S. Rep. John Conyers from Michigan, Sen. Dick Durban from Illinois, Actor Sean Penn, Global Exchange Executive Director Medea Benjamin, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., new-age author Marianne Williamson, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, and former LBJ press secretary and television personality Bill Moyers. It has become an ambitious project, to say the least..

..When Kucinich came to the podium he and the crowd were already in a frenzied state. It didn't take long for him to get the crowd standing again. "This is a country that fled an empire, but we didn't flee an empire to become an empire," he said. He also talked about civil liberties.. The progressive choir was back on its feet again when Kucinich jabbed the air with his finger saying, "What better place to talk about the Patriot Act than in Boston." Another standing ovation. Dennis then laid down the gauntlet:"It is so essential that we stand up. ..the Patriot Act was passed it was passed in the middle of the night and most members of Congress did not know what was in it."

In a press conference following the first forum Kucinich was asked by this reporter about the war: Why is there no timetable in the Democratic Party platform concerning the number one issue for Democrats? Kucinich immediately cited the morning's New York Times poll of Democratic delegates: "Nine out of 10 are opposed to this war." Then why is it not in the party platform? "Progressives are going to elect John Kerry," he said. "We hold the balance right now…progressives want to hold onto their identity then merge into the Democratic Party." But where are the teeth? What assurances will Democrats have? "The platform is insufficient. The platform is not to be taken as a finished product. We're going to unite behind John Kerry and we will continue to become stronger after the election," said Kucinich.

- - Democrats outhustling GOP in Florida
Democrats are making a must-win state tough territory for the president.
By ADAM C. SMITH, Times Political Editor
Published August 13, 2004

[Excerpt]

President Bush's prospects in Florida are looking increasingly shaky.

Barely 80 days before election day, signs abound that Democrats are outperforming Republicans in the state Bush virtually has to win to gain another term in the White House.

Republicans had vowed an unprecedented voter registration program, but Democrats are far outpacing them in registration gains.

Democrats have far more operatives on the ground, thanks largely to well-funded liberal organizations aggressively working to mobilize John Kerry supporters.

The past two statewide polls show the Massachusetts senator leading by 6 or 7 percentage points, and, along with other recent polls, point to a number of other ominous signs for the president.

Though the Bush-Cheney campaign boasts an unprecedented grass-roots effort, some Republicans are quietly fretting. Not only does Bush look vulnerable in must-win Florida, they say, at the very least he could be forced to divert resources here that may be needed elsewhere.

"Not only is Florida becoming a problem for the campaign but it could make some Southern border states that are usually safely Republican slip into competitive mode in the last two to three weeks of the campaign," said InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery, a former strategist for Newt Gingrich. "If Bush loses Florida, it's lights out."

Should Florida's 27 electoral votes move to the Democratic column, the electoral math would look bleak for Bush. He would have to win several states he lost in 2000.

An Aug. 5-10 Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday showed 47 percent of Florida voters backed Kerry, 41 percent Bush and 4 percent independent candidate Ralph Nader. The same poll had Bush and Kerry tied in Florida six weeks ago. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Other Quinnipiac findings suggest potentially more problems for Bush: 54 percent of voters disapproved of the president's job performance; only one in three independent voters backed Bush; among women, Kerry led by 14 percentage points; among men Bush led by 2 percentage points.

In the virtually tied Florida election of 2000, exit polls showed Bush enjoyed a 26 point advantage over Al Gore among male Florida voters; they essentially tied among independent voters.

At this point in 2000, Gore was just beginning to focus on Florida. This year, Democrats have been pouring money into the state for months. Kerry has spent 13 days in the state since March; Bush has spent eight since January.

The Kerry campaign and state and national Democratic parties have some 45 paid staffers in the state; by next week they will have about 60. By the end of next month they will have 125.

Seven Kerry campaign offices are now open - including in Tampa and Pinellas Park - and four more will be open within two weeks.

Arguably the most crucial piece of the Kerry Florida operation, though, is not even working with the campaign.

Every day across the state, a host of independent groups legally barred from coordinating with the Kerry campaign are paying hundreds of people to register, target and mobilize anti-Bush voters. One group, Tampa-based America Coming Together, has about 300 paid staffers working in Florida. By Nov. 2, they will have spent an estimated $10-million here.

Their work has produced tangible results: Through June, Democrats added 129,423 voters to their roll, compared to 75,132 for Republicans and 122,769 registered to neither party..

THE JOKE:

President Bush and Colin Powell are sitting in a bar. A guy walks in and asks the barman,"Isn't that Bush and Powell sitting over there?" The barman says,"Yep, that's them." So the guy walks over and says, "Wow, this is a real honor.

What are you guys doing in here?'

Bush says, "We're planning WW III." And the guy says, "Really? What's going to happen?"

Bush says, "Well, we're going to kill 140 million Iraqis this time and one blonde with big tits."

The guy exclaimed, "A blonde with big tits? Why kill a blonde with big tits?"

Bush turns to Powell, punches him on the shoulder and says...

"See, smart ass?! I told you no one would worry about the 140 million Iraqis."

- - Iraq: U.S. Keeps Winning Battles, Losing Wars

Published on Friday, August 13, 2004 by the Inter Press Service
Iraq: U.S. Keeps Winning Battles, Losing Wars
by Jim Lobe

WASHINGTON - Once again, U.S. armed forces appear on the verge of winning a decisive military victory in Iraq -- this time in the holy city of Najaf. And once again, they appear closer to losing the larger wars for a stable and friendly Iraq and for an Islamic world that will cease producing anti-U.S. terrorism.

That is the rapidly growing concern of Middle East and Islamic specialists as U.S. Marines, after a week of fighting, captured virtually all of central Najaf on Thursday, including the home of Mahdi Army leader Moqtada al-Sadr, and launched a final siege of the Imam Ali mosque, which is considered the world's holiest shrine by some 120 million Shiite Muslims.

Even as the military commanders and Iraq's interim president, Iyad Allawi, debate whether to wait out Sadr and his armed followers, who are believed to be inside the shrine, or to invade its precincts -- preferably with Iraqi troops -- the end result is not likely to work in Washington's favor, according to most experts here.

Shiites ''worldwide are shocked and outraged over what is going on in Najaf'', Imam Moustafa Al-Qazwini, a prominent Shiite leader based in California, told the 'Los Angeles Times' on Thursday. ''They consider it an assault on the sanctity of Islam and in particular Shia Islam''.

''Any attack on that city will destroy America's future in Iraq completely'', said al-Qazwini, who supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 but became disillusioned with the occupation after several months of traveling to the occupied nation earlier this year.

3) Israel-Palestinian Peace Action Alert

URGENT ACTION ALERT!

Coalition launches letter-writing campaign for a "no" vote on Moskowitz's casino license application, scheduled for a vote on August 19th

----- Original Message -----

Friends,

Your fax can significant reduce the funding to settlements in Israel. How?

Irving Moskowitz is a Miami resident who makes millions of dollars off the poor in California by running "non-profit" bingo parlors in low-income neighborhoods. His money is used to support the most extremist right-wing elements in Israel – settler homes in Silwan, the Old City, Ras al-Ammud, and other Palestinian communities. I have been at many actions trying to prevent these settlements from being constructed, and once arrested trying to prevent Moskowitz himself from driving up to survey his new property.

Right now there is a singular opportunity to cut off Moskowitz's corrupt gambling operations in Hawaiian Gardens. A flood of faxes can influence the regulatory agency not to renew Moskowitz's gambling license, and thereby cut off this major flow of money into the settlements.

Please print out and fax the sample letter below (also attached). It is written to address the concerns of the Gambling Commission – the rampant corruption accompanying these casinos and the neglect of the local community, on which the license is premised.

This campaign is being organized by Rabbi Haim Dov Beliak and Jan Hunter, so contact them if you have questions (news@stopmoskowitz.org).

It's good to work together from Israel & the U.S., each in our own way, on this.

PLEASE WRITE GAMBLING COMMISSION URGING DENIAL OF SETTLER-FUNDER MOSKOWITZ'S GAMBLING LICENSE

Dear Friends,

..Please copy the following text and paste it into your outgoing email or your letterhead, modify it if you'd like, and sign your name. Addressing information follows the model letter text.
Model Text for Fax:

Dear Commissioner,

I respectfully urge you to vote NO on Irving Moskowitz's application for a permanent license to operate the Hawaiian Gardens Casino. Moskowitz's actions both in Hawaiian Gardens and the Middle East provide numerous justifications to deny him the privilege of a gambling license.

Moskowitz employed street-gang "muscle" to win the referendum authorizing casino gambling in Hawaiian Gardens. Then he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars recalling City Councilmembers who opposed his casino-and his use of millions of dollars of Hawaiian Gardens' public funds to develop it. Moskowitz controls the predominantly Latino city so completely that no one filed to run against his hand-picked City Council in the last election.

Moskowitz's political and economic control of Hawaiian Gardens, which is supposed to regulate his gambling businesses, is precisely the "corruptive influence" that the gambling code rules out for a license applicant. Moreover, a drive through Hawaiian Gardens shows that Moskowitz and the government he controls have done nothing to alleviate the blight and poverty of the City, one of Los Angeles County's poorest.

In the Middle East, Moskowitz has gone far beyond exercising his freedoms of speech and association. He has funded settler activities that, predictably, resulted in violence. Even though these deeds occur half a world away, I urge you to take note of them because they show that Moskowitz does not have the good character that the gambling code requires for the privilege of a license.

In 1996 riots sparked by the opening of a Moskowitz-sponsored tunnel near Jerusalem's Temple Mount took over 70 Israeli and Palestinian lives. Moskowitz has given millions of dollars from his Hawaiian Gardens bingo to the militant settler group Ateret Cohanim which is preparing for the rebuilding of the ancient Jewish temple on the Temple Mount in the place of two revered mosques.

In a deliberate effort to thwart peace, Moskowitz has purchased Palestinian properties in areas of Jerusalem designated for Palestinian sovereignty. Violence has often accompanied his colonizing of these properties with settlers. He is a leading funder of the settlers in Hebron, who are notorious for their vigilante-style attacks on that city's Palestinian majority. Even as the vote on his license application approaches, Moskowitz is generously funding the settlers resisting Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, according to an Israeli newspaper.

I hope that, after considering all of the above, you will agree that Moskowitz should not be rewarded with the privilege of a gambling license and that you will use the power the legislature gave you in the Gambling Control Act to vote against granting the license.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Sincerely yours,
