Editor's Notes:

There is perhaps too much to absorb in this issue; so please pay particular attention in item 1, following information on David Ray Griffin's newest book. In this section Jeremy Lynes is offering 9/11 truth DVDs at cost to help bring peace and justice into our world. Please help with that initiative. Item 1 includes other investigative reports on Iran, Iraq, Israel, US and nuclear foolery, and a review by David Swanson of the newest songs from an era yet to disappear, thanks to Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. Item 2 again touches upon the carbonization of our atmosphere. The picture looks grim, but then why is an engine to convert waste to clean power not yet receiving funding for prototype development? Item 3 is more proof that the Navy's LFA sonar is killing dolphins and whales. Item 4 is a hopeful sign that Vermont will claim sovereignty over the federal and corporate forces pushing for excessive and dangerous nuclear power.

is for good men to do nothing."

The American Empire and the Commonwealth of God:
A Political, Economic, Religious Statement
By David Ray Griffin, John B. Cobb Jr., Richard Falk, & Catherine Keller

Book Description

Four distinguished scholars here level a powerful critique of the rapid expansion of the emerging American empire
and its oppressive and destructive political, military, and economic policies.

Publishers Weekly - REVIEW

What do you get when you put three theologians together with an attorney? Not a joke, but a deadly serious, academic analysis of our nation, its past and its future. This collection of nine essays addresses the ideological and practical evidence and consequences of what the authors see as an often disguised imperial agenda inherent in the founding and development of the United States. The authors, besides sharing the conviction that the United States "is seeking to become the world's first borderless empire" whose imperialist policies constitute "the primary threat to the survival of the human species," share an affinity for the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. While they object to imperialism on "political, economic and ecological grounds" as well as on "religious-spiritual-moral grounds," they spend most of the book making their secular statement; only the last three essays speak directly of religion. Keller's contribution contains a particularly interesting "debate" between the people she calls "Bush-Doctrine Idealists and the great idol-smasher John Calvin." Students of American history, government and political science, will feel quite at home within these pages..

- - Springsteen and Young: Music of a Once and Future Democracy
By David Swanson

[EXCERPT]

Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young have just released a pair of incredible albums of protest, one a bone-rattling revival of the best of rebel music of ages past, the other an impassioned attack on our present slide toward fascism. A hundred years from now, if the human race has survived, when a future Springsteen records a future "Seeger Sessions" it will be bound to include the music of Young's "Living With War." Also by that time, Young's instant classic, "Let's Impeach the President," will have been translated, as any national anthem should, into a variety of languages, some or all of them, no doubt, destined to be deemed inappropriate by future proponents of the worst of the past.

Springsteen's album is a foot-stomping, sing-a-long, can't-sit-still party. It's amazing that with music this good anything remains to be done in the world and that televisions are actually purchased and viewed. As long as you have one, though, flip the CD over and watch the DVD of Bruce and his buddies jamming in a farm house and talking about what they're trying to accomplish. And stick the CD in a player you can bring to your next local activist meeting, labor rally, Camp Casey, impeachment forum, sit-in at your congress member's office, or immigrants' rights event. This is not the slow and pensive Bruce, and these are not songs that only a political activist could love. This is music that everyone will dance and tap their hands to, many without catching on to the themes that give this music power.

Young, like Springsteen, uses a chorus of enthusiastic voices on his new album, which provides a sense of masses of people united
behind his songs, including the opening track "After the Garden is Gone."

Won't need no shadow man running the government

Won't need no stinkin war

Won''t need no hair cut

Won't need no shoe shine

After the Garden is Gone

The title track, "Living With War," quotes from the Star Spangled Banner and also says:

I join the multitudes

I raise my hand in peace

I never bow to the laws of the thought police

I take a holy vow

To never kill again

To never kill again

"Shock and Awe" is one of the rockingest tunes, and one of the more timely, with its lyric
"Back in the Days of Mission Accomplished," citing Bush's speech of May 1, 2003.

But the song destined for immortality is the song that will in coming weeks and months be used as a
movement song, the song that fearlessly and directly tackles the greatest immediate need the world has:

"Let's Impeach the President"

Let’s impeach the president for lying
And misleading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door
He’s the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war
Let’s impeach the president for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones
What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government’s protection
Or was someone just not home that day?
Let’s impeach the president
For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected
Thank god he’s racking down on steroids
Since he sold his old baseball team
There’s lot of people looking at big trouble
But of course the president is clean
Thank God

2) Chilling warnings on receding permafrost
02 May 2006

The annual loss of around 1 per cent of the world's permafrost areas will trigger the release of more greenhouse gases, starting a vicious circle that could make global warming even worse than anticipated, scientists have warned.

Peter Kershaw from the University of Alberta at Edmonton, Canada warned an audience of over 500 people at the Royal Geographical Society, London on Thursday that `due to global warming, permafrost in the Arctic is degrading.' Kershaw has been monitoring the effects of climate change on Arctic biotopes for many years, supported by volunteers who can join his research via the Earthwatch Institute.

Kershaw's research on locations in Canada at Churchill and in the Mackenzie Mountains has shown that permafrost areas are receding rapidly, and if current trends continue they will disappear completely within decades. These vast frozen areas on all continents surrounding the North Pole harbour over 400 gigatons of organic carbon locked in frozen peatland. Kershaw thinks that the release of methane and carbon dioxide from these peatlands will act as a positive feedback loop that could make global warming even worse than previously thought. `The permafrost component of global warming has been underappreciated,' he told Chemistry World.

`Peter Kershaw's research shows how global warming is beginning to unravel the earth's natural systems for storing carbon,' said Roger Mitchell, chief scientist at Earthwatch Europe. `If this system is further disrupted there will be huge consequences for the entire planet.'

3) Navy Sonar and Mass Dolphin Stranding

STOP THE NAVY NOISE!

Activist E-Mail Alert for Navy LFA Sonar Campaign
International Marine Mammal Project, Earth Island Institute

= = = = = = = = = =

Dear LFA Activists:

As many of you know, much of the world's current concerns with intense military sonar effects on whales and dolphins began in Hawai'i, where sonar testing and annual anti-submarine warfare training cruises offshore associated with strandings and other problems for whales and dolphins, caused local activists to raise the issue of underwater noise pollution. Their cause has now become a global concern, in no small part due to their dedication and your
dedication.

A new study out by the National Marine Fisheries Service suggests that acoustic bombardment by intense Navy sonars could have caused a horrible stranding of up to 200 melon-headed whales in Hawai'i in 2004 (see articles below).

Just as predictable, unfortunately, is the continued denial by the US Navy that there is anything wrong or that the use of intense military sonar could possibly have any effect on anything. What, me worry? (This of course also fits into the pattern of the current Bush Administration to deny any adverse impacts on the environment from their disastrous cowboy diplomacy and business-friendly actions.)

What to do? What to do?

As always, we need to insist that Congress keep the Navy accountable. And we need to change Congress so that Congress will not continue to toadie to the Bush military/industrial complex (which is really not so complex, just greedy) agenda.

November 2006 will be a watershed, even historical, US election -- get ready for it! Plan to vote.. Throw the bums out and restore our democracy!

Sonar Called Likely Stranding Cause

By Marc Kaufman
Washington Post Staff Writer

Federal marine specialists have concluded that Navy sonar was the most likely cause
of the unusual stranding of melon-headed whales in a Hawaiian bay in 2004.

Report: Sonar May Have Caused Whale Stranding

By Tony Perry, Times Staff Writer
April 28, 2006

SAN DIEGO - The unusual stranding of 150 melon-headed whales in a shallow bay off the island of Kauai in 2004 could have been caused by the animals being spooked by the use of sonar by Navy ships, a federal agency reported Thursday.

"We can find no other cause for this event - given the fact there are many things we don't know," said Teri Rowles, a marine mammal veterinarian with the Fisheries Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

4) Vermont State Rights CAN Protect New England

From Deb Katz < deb@nukebusters.org >

Great News!!

The Vermont House has passed a version of S 124 by a vote of 130-0!!

This bill clearly was seen as a home, state rule issue. It was the work of many volunteers from a group of organizations pulling together to ask their members to call their state representatives which turned the tide- NFV, NEC, VPIRG,CLF, VCE, CAN and others.

Thank you for your help!

But we are not done. This bill now gives us the chance to terminate Vermont Yankee's license and replace VY with sustainable energy. We now have a choice about our energy future. It will not be easy. We must convince a majority of representatives that it is in the best interest of Vermont to turn off VY in 2012.

We must organize, organize, organize EVERYONE especially in the north about the choices that Vermonters can make to be a truely green state. We are going to teach and talk to every representative about the issues around VY and how VT can replace the 30% of electricity it gets from VY with solar, wind and energy efficiencies!!

Get Ready!! Set!! GO!!!

Converting Waste Heat Into Power -- ReGen Power Systems, Ltd. of Sanford, ME, is pioneering development of a 1 megawatt low temperature Stirling power system to convert excess process heat and steam energy at industrial plants into electricity. The system will be powered by a novel Stirling engine designed to operate at the moderate and lower temperatures found in process heating at paper mills, steel mills, chemicals and petroleum refining facilities, glass ovens, cement plants and similar locations. In addition to high efficiency, the ReGen systems will produce additional power with no new fuel combustion. Not only will Industries save money, but they can produce electricity with no new pollution emissions, enabling companies to contribute in a positive way to the environment.
