FN-Editor’s note: Not taking anything away from this courageous film by Aaron Russo, “America: From Freedom to Fascism,” I wish such an important documentary would have used a title to distinguish the many free nations in this hemisphere from that of the United States of America. However, the important issues covered in this film should start an overpowering Income Tax Rebellion in the US by We, the People; not just based on the US government’s fraudulent past, but the current misrepresentation by Congress, and their continuing to fund an illegal war creating world-wide destabilization and suffering.
“America: From Freedom to Fascism” ~ the Film
Determined to find the law that requires American citizens to pay income tax, producer Aaron Russo ("The Rose," "Trading Places") set out on a journey to find the evidence. This film which is neither left, nor right-wing is a startling examination of government. The public, seeing through the tissue of Bush administration lies told to justify an invasion that never had anything to do with the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 or weapons of mass destruction, now has begun a national questioning: Why are we still in Iraq? The answers posted most widely on the Internet by critics of the war suggest its continuation as a naked imperial grab for the world’s second-largest petroleum source, but that is wrong.
It’s not primarily about the oil; it’s much more about the military-industrial complex, the label employed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower 45 years ago when he warned of the dangers of “a permanent arms industry of vast proportions.”
The Cold War had provided the rationale for the first peacetime creation of a militarized economy. While the former general, Eisenhower, was well aware of the military threat posed by the Soviet Union, he chose in his farewell presidential address to the nation to warn that the war profiteers had an agenda of their own, one that was inimical to the survival of American democracy:
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”
Ponder those words as you consider the predominant presence of former Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney in the councils of this White House, and how his old company has profiteered more than any other from the disaster that is Iraq. Despite having been found to have overcharged some $60 million to the U.S. military for fuel deliveries, the formerly bankrupt Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root continues to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in lucrative contracts.
There is more. Military spending has skyrocketed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, returning to Cold War levels. A devastating report by the Center for Defense Information, founded by former top-ranking admirals and generals, reveals that in the most recent federal budget overall defense spending will rise to more than $550 billion. Compare that to the $20 billion that the United Nations and all of its agencies and funds spend each year on all of its programs to make this a safer and more livable world.
That U.S. military budget exceeds what the rest of the world’s nations combined spend on defense. Nor can it be justified as militarily necessary to counter terrorists, who used primitive $10 box cutters to commandeer civilian aircraft on 9/11. It only makes sense as a field of dreams for defense contractors and their allies in Washington who seized upon the 9/11 tragedy to invent a new Cold War. Imagine their panic at the end of the old one and their glee at this newfound opportunity.
Yes, some in those circles were also eager to exploit Iraq’s oil wealth, which does explain the abysmal indifference to the deteriorating situation in resource-poor Afghanistan, birthplace of the Sept. 11 plot, while our nation’s resources are squandered in occupying Iraq, which had nothing to do with it.
Yes, some, like Paul Wolfowitz, the genius who was the No. 2 in the U.S. Defense Department and has been rewarded for his leadership with appointment as head of the World Bank, did argue that Iraq’s oil revenue would pay for our imperial adventure. A recent study by Nobel Prize-wining economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and Harvard University’s Linda Bilmes marked that absurdity by estimating the true cost of the Iraq adventure to U.S taxpayers at a whopping $2.267 trillion, in excess of any cost borne by the Iraqis themselves.
The big prize here for Bush’s foreign policy is not the acquisition of natural resources or the enhancement of U.S. security, but rather the lining of the pockets of the defense contractors, the merchants of death who mine our treasury. But because the arms industry is coddled by political parties and the mass media, their antics go largely unnoticed. Our politicians and pundits argue endlessly about a couple of billion dollars that may be spent on improving education or ending poverty, but they casually waste that amount in a few days in Iraq.
As Eisenhower warned: “We should take nothing for granted, only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together. ... We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.”
Too bad we no longer have leading Republicans, or Democrats, warning of that danger.

The man who sees absolutes, where all other men see nuances
and shades of meaning, is either a prophet, or a quack.
Donald H. Rumsfeld is not a prophet.

..But, to date, this government has proved little besides its own arrogance, and its own hubris.
Mr. Rumsfeld is also personally confused, morally or intellectually, about his own Standing in this matter. From Iraq to Katrina, to the entire "Fog of Fear" which continues to envelop this nation, he, Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney, and their cronies have - inadvertently or intentionally - profited and benefited, both personally, and politically.
And yet he can stand up, in public, and question the morality and the intellect of those of us who dare ask just for the receipt for the Emporer's New Clothes?
The confusion is about whether this Secretary of Defense, and this administration, are in fact now accomplishing what they claim the terrorists seek: The destruction of our freedoms, the very ones for which the same veterans Mr. Rumsfeld addressed yesterday in Salt Lake City, so valiantly fought.
And about Mr. Rumsfeld's other main assertion, that this country faces a "new type of fascism."
As he was correct to remind us how a government that knew everything could get everything wrong, so too was he right when he said that - though probably not in the way he thought he meant it.
This country faces a new type of fascism - indeed.
Although I presumptuously use his sign-off each night, in feeble tribute, I have utterly no claim to the words of the exemplary journalist Edward R. Murrow.
But never in the trial of a thousand years of writing could I come close to matching how he phrased a warning to an earlier generation of us, at a time when other politicians thought they (and they alone) knew everything, and branded those who disagreed: "confused" or "immoral."
Thus, forgive me, for reading Murrow, in full:
"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty," he said, in 1954. "We must remember always that accusation is not proof, and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law.
"We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men, not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate, and to defend causes that were for the moment unpopular."

Democratic Underground Demopedia reports in Who Killed John O’Neill that at the time of 9/11, AIG, the world’s largest insurance company, and subsidiaries Marsh McLennan, ACE and Kroll, were run by the Greenberg family. With Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) member Maurice “Hank” Greenberg as the AIG godfather, the Familia’s tentacles curled around the heart of the tragedy.
Hank’s son Jeffrey, a CFR member as well, was chairman of Marsh & McLennan, situated on floors throughout the North Tower of the World Trade Center as well as the top floors of the South Tower. Marsh also had ties to the CIA. Son Evan Greenberg, a CFR member, was CEO of ACE Limited, situated in Tower 7, which also contained AIG subsidiary Kroll, closely related to the CIA, also with an office in Tower 7.
Tower 7 also contained offices of the FBI, Department of Defense, IRS (which contained prodigious amounts of corporate tax fraud corporate, including Enron’s), US Secret Service, Securities & Exchange Commission (with more stock fraud records), and Citibank’s Salomon Smith Barney, the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management and many other financial institutions.
Greenberg’s cousin, Alan “Ace” Greenberg, was former CEO of Bear Sterns, where the Bush family, Cheney family George Schultz, James Baker, et al, did business. It is the leading brokerage firm of the great and all-powerful Bush Familia.
Also reported by Democratic Underground, AIG’s Kroll “provided protection services,” among other things, to high level Americans at home and abroad. Kroll had military teams in their company and merged with Armor Holdings on August 23, 2001, adding Defence Systems Limited, another private military corporation, to their operation, and an ex-KGB team called Alpha Firm earlier acquired by Defense Systems Limited. These four teams could have been used on 9/11, part of a “corporatizing” of black ops in tandem with military teams.
According to whistleblower Richard Grove, who worked as a senior manager for SilverStream Software on Marsh and AIG accounts, Kroll also managed the Enron fraud once Kenneth Lay stepped down.
Marsh, immediately after 9/11, established a specialized terrorism team called Marsh Crisis Consultancy (led by L. Paul Bremer III), adding the teams Control Risks Group, a British ex-SAS team and Versar, bio-terrorism and homeland defense team. These players could have known each other from 9/11, bringing in new assignments and profits.
Democratic Underground also reports, AIG allegedly was laundering drug money, and was involved in the Afghanistan oil and gas pipelines. Greenberg and the Adnan Khasshogi family allegedly benefited from the Afghanistan narcotics trade and interests in the oil and gas pipelines, as well.
Greenberg’s Law Firm Connections to Bush
According to
http://www.sourcewatch.org, the Greenbergs were and are connected to the Bush Familia via their Miami-based law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, a 1,350-lawyer, full-service international firm. Here are a few connects . . .
1) G-T represented George W. Bush in the Bush-Gore 2000 Florida election vote recount.
2) They personally represent Florida Governor Jeb Bush.
3) They hired son of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on Election Day 2000 -- after which Justice Scalia cast one of the 5 to 4 deciding votes that placed Bush in the White House.
4) They partially funded/sponsored a delegation to Israel by House-Senate Armed Services Committee members and government contractors to witness and be briefed on interrogations resistance procedures and torture techniques.
5) The firm has prominent administrative positions in Massachusetts 9/11 Fund, which also involves Bush family banking house Brown Brothers Harriman (the same BBH involved with Prescott Bush’s bankrolling the Nazis in World War II).
6) Traurig Greenberg works with 9-11 victims on planning their US government “hushmail/bribery estates.” That is, to receive the money, the victim’s family must sign an agreement never to sue the government for any reason. Victim-wife Ellen Mariani is currently being legally harassed for not signing and for holding the Bush government’s feet to the fire.
7) Bush still owes the Greenberg Traurig firm nearly $1 million for work done by dozens of lawyers and paralegals, leaving questions why a Republican candidate would hire a Democratic lawyer from a Democratic firm. See Greenberg Traurig link above for more scandals.
Greenberg’s Relationship to Larry Silverstein
On July 24, 2001, six weeks before 9/11, Larry Silverstein took control of the lease of all the WTC buildings. This followed the Port Authority decision on April 26.
According to
http://democraticunderground.com, the three companies who originally insured the WTC were AIG, Marsh and ACE, all run as mentioned by the Greenbergs at the time. They then sold stakes of the original contract to their competition, a technique called reinsuring.
Once the Towers came down, the reinsurers got caught holding the bag. This would inextricably tie the Greenbergs to Silverstein and the larger conspiracy of 9/11. If they had no foreknowledge of events to occur, why would the Greenbergs have unloaded so many stakes in their contract?
According to Michel Chossudovsky in Financial Bonanza behind the 9/11 Tragedy, “On October 17, 2000, eleven months before 9/11, Blackstone Real Estate Advisors, of The Blackstone Group, L.P, purchased, from Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, the participating mortgage secured by World Trade Center, Building 7.1.” [Blackstone in 2000 also purchased a 50 percent stake in Universal Studios, producers of the myth-perpetuating Flight 93.]
“April 26, 2001 the Port Authority leased the WTC for 99 years to Silverstein Properties and Westfield America Inc.
“The transaction was authorised by Port Authority Chairman Lewis M. Eisenberg. This transfer from the New York and New Jersey Port Authority was tantamount to the privatisation of the WTC Complex. The official press release described it as ‘the richest real estate prize in New York City history.’ The retail space underneath the complex was leased to Westfield America Inc.
“On 24 July 2001, 6 weeks prior to 9/11 Silverstein took control of the lease of the WTC following the Port Authority decision on April 26.
“Silverstein and Frank Lowy, CEO of Westefield Inc. took control of the 10.6 million-square-foot WTC complex.
"Lowy leased the shopping concourse called the Mall at the WTC, which comprised about 427,000 square feet of retail space.”
“Explicitly included in the agreement was that Silverstein and Westfield ‘were given the right to rebuild the structures if they were destroyed.'’
“In this transaction, Silverstein signed a rental contract for the WTC over 99 years amounting to 3.2 billion dollars in installments to be made to the Port Authority: 800 million covered fees including a down payment of the order of 100 million dollars. Of this amount, Silverstein put in 14 million dollars of his own money. The annual payment on the lease was of the order of 115 million dollars.
“In the wake of the WTC attacks, Silverstein is suing for some $7.1 billion in insurance money, double the amount of the value of the 99 year lease.” In fact, some $5 billion was actually returned, given the multiple court-case protests of the insurers.

The California Coastal Commission (CCC) will reconsider the Navy's request for a consistency determination for the Navy's offshore training exercises, which includes the use of mid-frequency active sonars offshore of southern California. These kind of trainings have coincided with mass strandings of whales and dolphins in other areas of the world. The reconsideration will take place at the next CCC meeting in Long Beach, CA, on Wednesday, January 10th, 2007; Item #10b on the agenda.
WRITTEN COMMENTS ARE NEEDED AS WELL AS BODIES AT THE HEARING!
As you know, the CCC put off a consistency determination (a finding by the CCC that the Navy's exercises are consistent with the California Coastal Plan, under provisions of the federal Coastal Zone Management Act) at their December 15th meeting in San Francisco. The CCC is now asking the Navy for additional information, more protection for whales, and more monitoring of the training exercises. We expect a report from the CCC for the Navy to be made public next week, with details of what the CCC is asking the Navy to do.
One of the most important issues is the level of noise "acceptable" to whales and other marine mammals. Over the past few years, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has bowed to pressure from the Navy and the oil industry to adopt a level of 180 dB as "acceptable" to whales and other marine mammals. In fact, whales have been known to react to noises as low as 90 dB (as the decibel system is logarithmic, 90 dB is 100 MILLION times less energy than 180 dB!). The CCC has adopted, instead, a level of 154 dB for California coastal waters, as that is the highest level deemed "safe" for divers by the Navy. As any whales killed or injured by the Navy with sonars will seriously hurt the California coastal zone (within the 3 mile limit), the CCC is asking the Navy to adopt the 154 dB maximum level for whales and dolphins. This is clearly NOT what the Navy wants, and they are expected to fight it strongly.
Other protective measures the CCC is asking for include better monitoring of the use of mid-frequency active sonars to make sure marine mammals are not disturbed, special protection for gray whales during the migration season, and no testing of sonars at night when marine mammals cannot be spotted by observers.

URGE THE COMMISSION:
(1) To ensure the Navy's training exercises will not harm any whales or marine mammals before approving a consistency determination. The Commission should not cave in to the Navy's unacceptable intransigence in protecting California's ocean resources.
(2) To ensure the Navy uses no more than 154 dB as the maximum noise level around any whales and other marine mammals. Even 154 dB is high enough to harass and interfere with communications by cetaceans that use the California coastal zone.
(3) To ensure that the Navy increases monitoring for effects of the use of mid-frequency sonars on marine mammals, halts use of mid-frequency active sonars at night, and further provides protection to the entire population of gray whales which migrates through Southern California waters each year.

UCIL's Uranium sludge mixes with Creek water,
after a pipe carrying it bursts
Uranium waste has started to flow in a nearby creek, after a pipe belonging to UCIL's tailing pond in Tilaitand burst. As a result, fish, frogs and other riparian life in the creek are starting to die and are washing up to the surface. Tribals from Dungaridinh allege that they informed the the Central Industrial Security Force about this disaster Sunday morning, but that even after 9 hours, no officer from CISF bothered to even show up at the disaster site. It was only around 4 pm that the flow of Uranium sludge into the tailing pond from the Mill House was arrested, and the villagers could finally breathe a sigh of relief. Scared and angry villagers have stopped all work in the area and no dumpers or trucks are now allowed in or out of the area. Although workers from UCIL have started to repair the pipe since Monday morning, the villagers say this is not enough. They say that UCIL is also obliged to clean up the toxic sludge which has formed a thick layer on the surface of the creek. Unless this is done, they will continue to agitate and will not allow further work.
Ghanshyam Biruli, the president of Jharkhand Organization against Radiation(JOAR), has also arrived at the disaster site. He says that people bathe and wash clothes in the creek water. Since the pipe burst on Sunday, the villagers have been quite distraught and fearful.
According to Biruli, the creek water has stopped flowing because a thick layer of Uranium sludge has formed on the surface of the creek starting from Dungaridinh and ending at the colony temple. It is quite likely that the Gurra and Svarnalekha rivers will also be adversely affected by this environmental disaster. This Uranium sludge is dumped from the Jadugoda unit of the UCIL though a pipe into the tailing pond. After the pipe burst, and the Uranium sludge started to flow into the creek, fish, frogs, snakes and other riparian life forms have begun to die and are washing up to the surface. P Soren, Shripati Patro, Sukhlal Bahumik, Dubri Devgan, Sanjay Murmu, Bolay Majhi, Duli Kutiya, Prem Majhi and Sunil Murmu, all residents of Dungaridinh say that even if UCIL does clean up the mess it created, the water in the creek will still not be usable for at least 3 to 4 days. It is only after that the villagers will be able to bathe and wash clothes in the creek.
