Cassini Anniversary - What a long strange trip it has been

Cassini Anniversary - What a long strange trip it has been

18 August 2000

Just one year ago, Cassini whizzed by Earth just seconds away from potential disaster. The NASA space probe carries 72.3lbs of radioactive plutonium on board, which is used to produce thermo-electricity to run the 740-watts of electrical equipment for exploring the origin of life around Saturn in 2004. The poignancy of Dr. John W. Gofman's statement, "..I think the use of plutonium in space is a manifestation of organized insanity," stands clear and firm. Many scientists showed evidences on how an accident could result in millions of deaths, impacting life horrifically for thousands of years.

The program that Cassini was meant to herald exists today, ballistic missile defense. The Republican and Democratic parties in the U.S. support the continuation of Star Wars even following the two out of three recent test-failures and credible claims of fraudulent activity by Government and Industry representatives, fudging past test results in their favor. It is time for more people to speak out to stop a policy that threatens every one of us. Together, perhaps, we can help change this direction. Please support Karl Grossman and the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and respond on October 7 in support of their campaign for keeping space for peace. Our collective actions can help turn the threat of Cassini into a scary memory, and not let it become a signpost for a short-lived future.
