Editor's Notes:February 6, 2006 marks the thirtieth year of US imprisonment for Leonard Peltier. Unfortunately the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee lost another Chair recently, and one must wonder what's behind all the quick and chaotic turnarounds. The first item contains hopeful and disturbing information. It would make sense for progressive candidates to work together to represent the majority to safeguard our mutual interests. Item two covers a call for help to stop the Navy's experimental use of mammal head-splitting Low Frequency Active Sonar. Item three is on Leonard Peltier and events in western Massachusetts, and time for rememberence of a caged innocent human in the clutches of unjust law.

You know, the Clinton impeachment thing. Remember that?
When the Associated Press reported last week that the impeachment of President Clinton had made it into major high school history textbooks, it seemed only fitting. Most adults forgot about the impeachment the instant it was over. Now high school kids can read the story, and as soon as their exams are over, they too can forget it.
So, someday, 2005 might be recalled as the year the Clinton impeachment was relegated to the dustbin of history. But it also might be recalled as the year that paved the way for George W. Bush's impeachment.

Peak oil is most likely a term most readers have not heard before. That is about to change. The concept is slowly making its way onto the mainstream stage. It is intruding into the fringes of the public conscience and soon it may occupy the greater part. When that time comes, as it inevitably will, and probably sooner than you think, the world as we know it will end.
All of the oil that exists is the product of complex ecological processes: the decomposition of prehistoric plants and animals over eons of time. There will never be any more oil than there is now. There will only be less; and eventually there will be none. Peak oil refers to the time when the rate of extraction from a specific location (or the whole world) is at a maximum. Beyond the peak of extraction follows a steady and continuous decline. In the U.S. peak oil was reached in the early seventies of the last century. Since that time extraction of all U.S. oil reserves has been steadily declining, while demand has gradually increased. As more of the world becomes industrialized and taps into the world's oil pipeline, the more rapidly it is depleted. Once it's gone, it's gone. There will never be any more..
Peak oil is a concept that is well understood by most governments. The end of cheap oil means the collapse not only of the U.S. economy but also the global economy. Alarm over peak oil is almost certainly the hidden reason that the U.S. invaded Iraq. It is the reason we are building fourteen permanent military bases in that country. The U.S. has no intentions of ever leaving Iraq as long as one drop of our precious oil lies beneath their sand. How our oil got beneath their sand must have some cryptogamous connection to the ideology of manifest destiny that has driven this nation to unthinkable crimes against nature and humanity. It is the basis for World War Three, which we may already have initiated with the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Widespread resource wars will be the very predictable result of the rush to extract the world's last remaining and dwindling oil reserves.
Peak oil is almost certainly the underlying cause for the events of 9/11. The American people are not being told the truth. There is a high probability that Oil men in high places of the U.S. government orchestrated those events in order to get the American People behind the invasion of first Afghanistan, then Iraq; and probably Iran, Syria or North Korea will be next. Dick Cheney appears to be a likely suspect, perhaps with the aid of Poppy Bush and his CIA connections. They intend to get average American's used to the idea of war that will not end in our lifetimes. The age of cheap oil is nearing an end and the financiers of war and empire are scared stiff. They will do anything to have access to the last dregs of oil that can be sucked out of the earth, no matter which nations sit atop them. The second largest reserves of oil happen to lie beneath Iraq. The U.S. connections to the House of Saud are too well documented to warrant discussion here.
We must wake up to what kind of people we are dealing with. This government is not only more criminal and corrupt than we imagine-it is more criminal and illicit than we can imagine. Bush and company make the mafia look like boy scouts. Let me try to convey some idea of what I mean. The collection of thugs and criminals now running the country are the greatest and most dangerous organized crime syndicate in the world. And they possess the greatest arsenal of weapons, many of them nuclear, that the world has ever seen. They have an unparalleled propensity for violence. They are not who you think they are; and they are not doing what you think they are doing.
It has been said that the truth will set us free. If so, and I believe it will, it would behoove us to come to an honest reckoning with the history we have chosen as a nation to create. Any truth is better than make believe.

NSA Whistleblower Alleges Illegal Spying
Former Employee Admits to Being a Source for the New York Times

Russell Tice, a longtime insider at the National Security Agency, is now a whistleblower the agency would like to keep quiet.
For 20 years, Tice worked in the shadows as he helped the United States spy on other people's conversations around the world.
"I specialized in what's called special access programs," Tice said of his job. "We called them 'black world' programs and operations."
But now, Tice tells ABC News that some of those secret "black world" operations run by the NSA were operated in ways that he believes violated the law. He is prepared to tell Congress all he knows about the alleged wrongdoing in these programs run by the Defense Department and the NSA in the post-9/11 efforts to go after terrorists.
"The mentality was we need to get these guys, and we're going to do whatever it takes to get them," he said.

The Washington scandal over lobbyist Jack Abramoff may claim a casualty outside the nation's capital: Ralph Reed, a former presidential-campaign adviser who once headed one of the U.S.'s largest Christian activist groups.
Disclosures that Reed once ran an anti-gambling campaign that was secretly financed by casino-owning clients of his friend Abramoff have damaged his ability to raise funds for a bid to become Georgia's next lieutenant governor, other Republicans say.
That may undercut his chances of winning an office that he could use as a steppingstone to national political ambitions, they say..
Connections
Reed and Abramoff have known each other since the early 1980s, when they were leaders of the College Republicans along with another now-powerful Washington player, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist. They made an odd trio: Abramoff, an orthodox Jew who went to high school in Beverly Hills, California; Reed, a Christian southerner with boyish looks; and Norquist, a Massachusetts native with a penchant for dramatic monologues in his tax-cut crusade.
The three continued to work together until word broke that Abramoff may have defrauded his tribal clients. One, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, in 1999 donated money to Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform, which then wrote checks to Reed's anti-gambling coalition.

The U.S. Navy wants to put a testing ground for lethal mid-frequency sonar along the migratory path of highly endangered northern right whales, off the coast of North Carolina.

As the site of more than 160 exercises annually, the Navy's proposed testing range would create a 500-square-mile hub of year-round sonar activity and other intense underwater noise. The range would lie along the migratory route of endangered right whales, fewer than 400 of which are believed to exist today.
Just one year ago, 37 whales of three different species beached themselves on the shores of the Outer Banks, near the proposed testing range, following Navy sonar exercises in the area. Scientists have linked the use of high-intensity sonar to numerous other mass strandings of whales around the globe, from the Bahamas to the Canary Islands to Japan. Yet, incredibly, the Navy's analysis of its proposed testing range does not even mention, much less thoroughly examine, this stranding.
Beached whales have been found bleeding around their brains and ears after encounters with this lethal technology.
Military sonar may also be interfering with the ability of these majestic creatures to locate food, avoid predators and mate.

Leonard Peltier's Thirtieth Anniversary!
February 6, 2006 marks the thirtieth anniversary of Leonard Peltier's illegal extradition to the United States from Canada using coerced and fraudulent testimony. This was the beginning of his odyssey that resulted in his false conviction for the June 1975 murder of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in Federal Court in Fargo, North Dakota in 1977.
During his thirty years imprisonment Leonard, has won acclaim and support across the globe. Amnesty International, the leading human rights in the world, considers Leonard a "prisoner of conscious" and calls for his "immediate release." His prison writings "My Life is My Sun Dance" has been called by one America's leading historians -Howard Zinn- "An accusation against monstrous injustice, a beautiful expression of a man's soul, demanding release." South African human rights activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu called it "A deeply moving and very disturbing story of a gross miscarriage of justice."
Recent revelations of the Bush administration's widespread spying of the American people should remind many of similar activities by the federal government in the 1960s and 1970s against members of the civil right and anti-war movements and the American Indian Movement, of which, Leonard Peltier was an active member.
