9/11 Truth Has the Power to Unravel Fascism[EXCERPT]
Numerous prominent gatekeepers have recently said that 9/11 truth is a "distraction", and "takes energy away from working on more important issues". Are they right?
Actually, 9/11 is the core issue, the central knot which holds all of the other tyrannical actions of the last 6 years together.
When the central knot of 9/11 lies is pulled, it will cause the entire fascist mess to unravel.
Here's why:
• The administration's false claims linking Iraq and 9/11 helped convince a large portion of the American public to invade Iraq. At the time, the Iraq-911 link was at least as important in many people's minds as the fake WMDs as a reason to invade Iraq.
• The trauma of September 11, 2001 is what galvanized many Americans to rally around the Bush administration, to close ranks in a time of peril, and to give the commander in chief his supposed "mandate" (there was obviously election fraud).
Ever since 9/11, the American people have been terrified -- and thus irrational -- based upon the trauma of the vicious attacks. Since most Americans believe that the bad guys are "out there" and are about to get us unless we have a strong leader to fight them, they will not and CANNOT make any logical decisions about any other foreign or domestic issues -- including withdrawal from Iraq -- until "we get the bad guys". Numerous scientific studies show that people whipped into a state of fear can't make logical decisions. Unless we unwind the source of their fear -- the false belief that a guy living in a cave defeated all of America's defenses and that he's out to get us again -- people will keep on acting irrationally.
• The government policy of torture would not have been tolerated if we weren't misled into thinking that Saddam and Al-Qaeda had formed an unholy, all-powerful alliance on 9/11, and had to be stopped at any costs.
• The Bush administration has also used 9/11 as an excuse for domestic spying without warrant, and will use 9/11 as an excuse for every other unconstitutional, undemocratic, unAmerican destruction of civil liberties which it undertakes.
• Even after all of the government's lies have come out, Americans are still terrified about Arabs with weapons. Moreover, since Americans are still largely ignorant about the use of "false flag operations" by governments to justify wars, Americans will fall for a faked provocation. In other words, the fact that 9/11 has not been exposed as a false flag operation will enable the neoconservatives to use another faked terror incident in order to justify a war against Iran.
9/11 truth has the power to unravel fascism. By proving that our country cannot so easily be attacked without the complicity of insiders, 9/11 truth will pull the rug out from beneath the fear-based hysteria which has gripped our country and our world. As the fear decreases, people will start to emerge from their mental bunkers, and to reassess whether they are willing to tolerate fascism, injustice, and imperial wars based upon false pretenses. Rather than being a distraction, 9/11 truth is thus crucial for anyone who cares about America, liberty, justice or peace.For the complete article, see:

Our suspicions were validated: there’s a huge story here. It’s almost overwhelming. The best way to summarize is to publish my complaint filed last week with the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General.

Dear Inspector,
I am writing to request a special investigation into possible FBI corruption inside the Shreveport, LA. office. I have been researching the strange death of Dr. David M. Graham since I was passed his unpublished manuscript, last spring. This case is of the utmost importance, and is about to receive serious media attention.
A week ago, I returned from a fact-finding mission in Shreveport, New Orleans and Houston. Alongside reporter Jordan Green, I met many of Dr. Graham’s surviving friends and coworkers. Every one of them indicated that Dr. Graham’s death deserves a deeper investigation. No one believes that Dr. Graham was unstable, or suicidal. The only party to allege that Dr. Graham could have taken his own life is the Shreveport FBI. I personally did a face-to-face interview with FBI Special Agent Stephen Hayes, when I stumbled into him at his office in Shreveport. The tone and content of his comments were indicative. He was hostile, and belittling. The interview ended when he “called security” on me and Mr. Green, (who was there reporting for Yes! Weekly, Greensboro, N.C.)
Dr. Graham met two 9/11 terrorists, ten months before 9/11, in his native Shreveport. He was a medical associate of Dr. Mohammed Habeeb Ahmed (now a resident of San Jose, CA, we believe) and an associate of current federal fugitive Mohammed Jamal Khan (now residing in his native Pakistan, we believe). Dr. Graham was meticulous about these meetings. He wrote a book he tried to publish (“The 9/11 Graham Report”) and even created a set of four video tapes in which he clandestinely recorded Khan and Ahmed in his office in 2002 and 2003, discussing the year 2000 meetings with 9/11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Fayez Banihammad. In his book, Graham discusses cardboard boxes in Khan’s apartment that indicated that Khan was supplying documents or supplies to Khalid al-Mihdhar, who with al-Hazmi, was later identified to be one of the “ringleaders” of 9/11. Khan also had boxes bearing the names Nawaf al-Hazmi and Fayez Banihammad.
Khan’s connection to the 9/11 terrorists is beyond dispute. Not only does he corroborate these meetings and these connections, himself, in person, on video tape, but in Khan’s signed plea agreement dated April 19, 2002, in US District Court, Western District of Louisiana, (criminal # 02-50014-01) there is language that makes reference to the allegation that Khan may be prosecuted for the crimes related of 9/11:
“In no case does the United States Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana and the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas agree that there will be no prosecution of the defendant for any crimes concerning the hijacking of any airline or attack on any building or deaths that occurred on or about September 11, 2001. The United States Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana is simply not aware of the involvement of the defendant in these crimes at this time.”
Dr. David M. Graham was a gifted, brave, and rare American. This country was robbed of an asset when we lost him to mysterious circumstances. His death has never been investigated. His family is numbly living in a haze of fear, worried that asking for an investigation will result in reprisals.
Graham was an independent radio journalist who stood up to local political corruption. He was a Vietnam veteran who volunteered for medical missions in a combat zone. He was an evangelical Christian who clothed the poor, and a Shreveport dentist who pioneered advanced, healthy techniques. Dr. David M. Graham was likely poisoned, from propylene glycol, on May 29, 2004, between 11 AM and 1 PM, somewhere between Lake Conroe, Texas and Diboll, Texas. Two close friends, Richard Wilkes, and LeeAnn Scruggs, asked him, at separate times, during his painful 27 months of death-bed organ failure and paralysis, “Who did this to you?” Both times, he indicated it may have been the FBI.
Back in November 2000, when Graham suspected Mohammad Jamal Khan and friends of plotting against the local Barksdale Air Force Base, he notified the FBI. The FBI allegedly responded by passing along a death threat they allegedly received against “who ever ratted out Jamal Khan.” According to Graham’s eulogist, John Milkovich, Esq. of the Shreveport Community Church, the Shreveport FBI asked Dr. Graham about his “health” in a menacing tone, as if to indicate that his health may be soon in danger. Graham had been life-long friends with oil industry insider (and friend of President George Herbert Walker Bush) Vernon Moore. In our interview with Mr. Moore in New Orleans, last week, Moore said the FBI strongly urged Dr. Graham not to publish his book “The 9/11 Graham Report.” But Graham forged ahead. Shortly thereafter, he was poisoned. Moore told us: “For some reason the US government was covering for them people…. I couldn’t believe they come down on him like they did.”
Shreveport, Louisiana is roiled with a culture of political corruption. A major scandal unfolded recently upon the death of Caddo Parish Coroner Dr. George McCormick, who, it turns out, faked so many autopsies, several district attorneys and judges may be soon facing perjury charges for turning a blind eye.
The Shreveport FBI office is currently experiencing a high rate of turnover. I recently learned that FBI Shreveport Special Agent in Charge Mike Kinder is transferring out of Shreveport. Agent Ray Spoon, a key player in the Graham case, took early retirement from FBI four months ago. In my interview with Agent Stephen Hayes, he often glared angrily. Former Special Agent Ray Spoon told the local media that Graham had not met with the FBI before 9/11. But Hayes admitted to us that yes, he had met with Dr. Graham before 9/11.
During my trip to Shreveport and environs, I shot five hours of raw footage of sources close to Dr. Graham: the Rev. Richard Wilkes and his wife Tanya, Deacon John Milkovich, Pastor Denny Duron, dental hygienist LeeAnn Scruggs, investment advisor Mike Sledge, and others. We met with the sheriff in Angelina County, Texas, where Graham was taken to ER after a seizure in Diboll. But neither Diboll, nor the Angelina County Sheriff’s office, nor the EMTs have any 9-1-1 call records. That’s strange, especially because we learned a security guard had been posted to Graham’s room, even before a close friend indicated that Graham’s body should be checked for foul play.
Gordon Klausman and Ronald K. Smith in Willis, Texas, were the last to see Dr. Graham alive and well. When Gordon Klausman went to do an interview with the Houston FBI, he noted they weren’t curious about the circumstances of Graham’s poisoning. They were interested more in what Graham had been researching, the 9/11 hijackers.
According to DC authors Joe and Susan Trento’s 2006 book, Unsafe at Any Altitude, Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar, two of the terrorists that Graham was trying to expose, were Saudi spies, agents of the General Intelligence Directorate of the Saudi Royal Kingdom. This is a clearer confirmation of information suggested earlier by Senator Bob Graham’s 2004 book, Intelligence Matters in which Senator Graham exposes these same terrorists’ Saudi handlers in San Diego. Senator Graham documents the FBI’s protection of these spies.
As I discussed with an inspector at your office in late September, I realize that the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility has initial oversight on allegations of FBI corruption. However, because of the gravity of this case, this inspector at Justice indicated I should submit a report directly to the Office of the Inspector General. I have closely followed and reported on the case of FBI mafia mole Lynn DeVecchio, who was exonerated by the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility before being indicted on four counts of murder by Brooklyn’s DA, Charles Hynes, last year.
I can’t say who ordered the hit on Graham. Suspects could include operations deep inside the US military or intelligence networks. Powerful Saudi interests could have acted in concert with those parties. Saudis were protected even by the US Congress, when 27 pages of the Joint Inquiry were blacked out in order not to embarrass them. Senator Bob Graham’s book begins to finally shed some light on that 27-page redaction.
No matter who ordered the hit on Dr. Graham, it was managed by the FBI, in a number of ways. They were out front right away, suggesting to the media and the hospital doctors that Graham had been suicidal. This media report enraged the surviving friends and family, when it came out on KTBS, Channel 3, Shreveport:
“Houston police referred questions to the FBI office in Houston, which did not return calls for comment. Federal authorities in Shreveport said they are not involved and don’t know if there is anything sinister to Graham’s illness or if it was suicide attempt or was connected to Graham’s personal or business life.”
Graham was in good spirits, on the way to his pastor’s daughter’s wedding on May 29, 2004. Graham did suspect his life might have been in danger at this time, and took steps to protect himself. According to sources close to the deceased, the FBI told Dr. Graham’s doctors in Lufkin and Houston that he was “crazy” and “suicidal.” This act reduced the level of medical care Graham received at crucial moments in the ER, in Lufkin and Houston.
In sum, Graham’s ongoing relationship with the Shreveport FBI, from November 2000 until his poisoning in 2004, should have given him special protection as a supplier of information about the 9/11 terrorists in Shreveport, before and after 9/11.
Instead, Graham died a mysterious death that was never investigated. Shreveport FBI were extremely hostile when I asked them why. Agent Stephen Hayes indicated that Mohammed Jamal Khan Khan may have in fact been the FBI’s informant.
The Shreveport FBI appears to have protected foreign spies and 9/11 terrorists from a tenacious citizen researcher. An investigation of the Shreveport FBI could begin to expose who ordered Graham’s death. We must reassert the rule of law in America.

Graham’s death corroborates other publicly available evidence that these same key 9/11 hijackers, Nawaf Al-Hazmi, and Khalid Al-Mihdhar, enjoyed protection from entities inside the US military/intelligence network, while in the US before 9/11. It’s difficult to believe, but 9/11 may have been a kind of cattle prod to shock public opinion into supporting two wars of foreign aggression. We now know those wars were based on lies.
Here’s a timeline that shows a basis for this assertion:
January 2000: The CIA photographs and tracks 9/11 hijacker ringleaders, Nawaf Al-Hazmi, and Khalid Al-Mihdhar, at the Malaysian terrorism summit, in Kuala Lumpur. For some reason, the CIA does not to put them on the terrorist watch list. As a result, these terrorists, one of whom had helped bomb the USS Cole, are free to travel in and out of the USA, until 9/11. source

The web video, released Monday by Brave New Films, alleges that during his administration Giuliani failed to equip the FDNY with adequate, let alone functioning, communication equipment. As they say, ‘one picture is worth a thousand words’. In researching 9/11/2001 events, I watched several videos. Two images especially stay with me. In one, white-hot molten steel pours out of and down the side of one of the towers, still standing. The other image shows debris removal weeks after the event. Pockets of red-hot molten steel are clearly visible. Note that a jet-fuel fire does not create steel-melting temperatures. Molten steel does not lie!
Official reports completely ignore the molten steel found under all three buildings:
WTC 1, 2, and 7. (Please note that # 7 was not hit by an airplane!)
Molten steel is just one of many reasons why a new investigation is needed. But what I think does not really matter. What is important and should have been major news is that hundreds of credible, credentialed government and military professionals, scientists, engineers, architects, and scholars - from all sides of the political spectrum - criticize the official 9/11 report, urging a new investigation. In August 2007, James Quintiere, Ph.D., former Chief of the Fire Science Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), rejected the official explanation of the collapse of WTC Buildings.
In an article that appeared Sept. 23, 2007, seven CIA veterans denounce the official account of 9/11 as: "a joke", "a cover-up", "a monstrous series of lies", "a pretext for war", "not a serious piece of analysis", riddled with "serious shortcomings," "omissions," and "major flaws."
Most of the media, including the Keene Sentinel, ignored such important news. Instead, the Sentinel chose to feature on its front page an article ridiculing all criticism of the official story.
Please join me in asking the Sentinel to follow up this biased article with a presentation of statements of responsible, professional 9/11 critics. There is no better way to honor 9/11 victims, their families, and the first responders who are still alive!

www.911blogger.com/node/12002In an amazing about-face, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has implicitly admitted that its 10,000-page report on the destruction of the Twin Towers is a fraud, and that the buildings were destroyed by controlled demolition.
In its recent reply to family members Bill Doyle and Bob McIlvaine, scientists Steven Jones and Kevin Ryan, architect Richard Gage and the group Scholars for 9/11 Truth and Justice, NIST states: "We are unable to provide a full explanation of the total collapse."
Thus NIST euphemistically admits that its 10,000-page report on the Towers does not even pretend to provide any explanation whatsoever for the Towers' total collapse--and that indeed no such explanation is possible without invoking the politically-incorrect idea of controlled demolition.
NIST'S 10,000-page report purports to explain what it calls "collapse initiation" -- the loss of several floors' vertical support. In order to dream up this exceedingly unlikely scenario, NIST had to ignore its own tests that showed that virtually none of the steel got hotter than 500 degrees f. It had to claim that somehow the planes took out many core columns, despite the fact that only a direct hit by an engine would have been likely to do so, and that the chances of this happening even once are fairly low. It had to preposterously allege that the plane that nicked the corner of the South Tower took out more core columns than the one that hit the North Tower almost dead center. It had to tweak all the parameters till they screamed bloody murder and say that the steel was far weaker than it actually was, the fire was far hotter than it actually was, the sagging was far greater than it actually was, and so on. And so NIST hallucinated a computer-generated fantasy scenario for "collapse initiation"--the failure of a few floors.
But how do you get from the failure of a few floors to total collapse at free-fall speed of the entire structure? The short answer: You don't. Anyone with the slightest grasp of the laws of physics understands that even if all of the vertical supports on a few floors somehow failed catastrophically at exactly the same time--a virtually impossible event, but one necessary to explain why the Towers would come straight down rather than toppling sideways--the top part of the building could not fall THROUGH the still-intact, highly robust lower part of the building, straight through the path of most resistance, just as fast as it would have fallen through thin air.
Thus total free-fall collapse, even given NIST's ridiculous "initiation" scenario, is utterly impossible. The probability of it happening is exactly equal to the probability of the whole building suddenly falling upward and landing on the moon.
Compare this to a hypothetical case in which forensic evidence proves a victim was shot in the head three times at the foot of a cliff, but the body was found at the top of the cliff. The sheriff, who has the most to gain from the man's death, brings in NIST to explain how the man shot himself in the head three times and then fell upward 200 feet to land on the top of the cliff. NIST produces a 10,000-page report claiming to explain the event. The 10,000-page report ignores all the forensic evidence that the man was murdered, offering endless pages of scientific gobbledygook distorting all the forensic evidence in such a way as to show how a suicide actually could manage to squeeze off three head-shots, and offering a scenario explaining how "upward-fall initiation" took place.
After we read the whole 10,000 pages, it turns out that "upward-fall initiation" simply means that the man lost his footing after being shot. Okay, say Steve Jones, Kevin Ryan and friends, then after he lost his footing, how did he fall upward? NIST responds: "We are unable to provide a full explanation of falling-upward."
It is not surprising that NIST cannot explain a scenario that blatantly violates the basic laws of physics. What is surprising is that every newspaper in the world is not printing screaming front-page headlines reading NIST IMPLICITLY ADMITS: WTC TOWERS DESTROYED IN CONTROLLED DEMOLITION.

In 2003/4, I ran Dennis Kucinich's campaign for President in Santa Fe, NM. It was my first political effort since the long journey away from the Republican party into which I had been born. The effort had additional benefits: while planting Kucinch for President signs around Santa Fe, I met a former Captain in US Army Intelligence who was able to substantially add to my understanding of the 9/11 Inside Job. Very substantially.*
I have never seen the Congressman so morally energized and talented than he was at the standing room only Albuquerque town hall forum. But the real news coming from this event is that Congressman Kucinich, in public comments to me in my job as a newspaper editor, revealed that he supports both an investigation of the nuclear armed B-52 that flew from Minot to Barksdale as well as a full new 911 investigation.
In 2004, Kucinich was wary of 9/11 inside job questions from his New Mexico campaign, saying he had no evidence to support such a thesis and acting worried that comments he made might be used against him later. Now, although he didn't describe the nature of his concern, he has made it clear that a full investigation of the events is necessary. Reports from activists during the past months have suggested that he was in favor of a "limited" new 911 investigation. I asked him point blank: "limited or full investigation." His answer: "full investigation." The body language was very clear that we need to get to the bottom of it. Prayers for Dennis are in order, and a contingent of Marine security specialists.
The Congressman was equally forceful and certain on the question of the B-52 overflight. With both awareness of the news on the subject and the gravity of the situation, Kucinich immediately agreed that a Congressional investigation should be conducted. My followup question was, "How does one start such an investigation in Congress?" to which Dennis replied with his trademark straight-shooting: "I just did it."
Adding to the seriousness of the situation, during his public speech, in front of cameras, news media and roughly 500 supporters, Kucinich stated publicly that were he to be elected, one of his first actions would be to turn over Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gates, Rice et al to law enforcement for prosecution.**
Dennis wasn't kidding either, he prefaced this statement with a slow and deliberate announcement that he wanted his stance on the Administration's criminality to be public. The man is serious. After he was done answering my questions, we shook hands and looked straight at each other. He may be running for President, but Dennis is one of us.

I have always been fascinated with trying to see the more subliminal/hidden aspects of our world, so long as they are either based in hard-nosed verified fact; or understood as speculative vision (which may possess a metaphoric validity of its own). With The Road to 9/11: Wealth, Empire, and the Future of America, University of California Berkeley professor emeritus Peter Dale Scott delivers the preceding.
Tightly non-speculative, meticulous and insightful, Dr. Scott shines the know-glow on a rather extensive and sordid history of U.S. governmental shadow activities; predominantly partial or total cover-ups. Fortunately, in this his magnum opus, he also holds out the promise of an American redemption, so long as the festering boil of turpitude is lanced and drained in the light.
Writing with a touch of the charm of the poet that he is, Dr. Scott has been walking us through this political-historical shadow land for some time now. The Road to 9/11, which as the title indicates, provides historic origins of the terrorist strikes of September 11, 2001, builds on and extends his prior research into secret intelligence activities as presented in his two past UC Press books; Cocaine Politics: Drugs, Armies, and the CIA in Central America (1993) and Deep Politics and the Death of JFK (1996) (among others) by speaking both about current concerns with the Bush-Cheney administration in relations to the events on 9/11/01 and by going further backwards -- scrutinizing secret American governmental activities just after the end of World War II. It vividly concentrates on Richard Nixon’s failed regime and Tricky Dick’s early forays into threatening constitutional democracy as revealed during the Watergate hearings. He then depicts and examines the activities of Nixon’s successor Gerald Ford, concentrating on his (what would later become neocon) team of Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney.
Scott pays close attention to the Rumsfeld-Cheney collaboration under Ronald Reagan’s regime on what is known as the Continuity of Government (COG) strategy: a parallel planning structure in lieu of nuclear war which includes plans for warrantless surveillance, suspension of habeas corpus, and the arrangements for mass detention; proposals which can also be described as plans for a potential military-civilian coup. By now the narrative of shadow government -- what Scott calls “deep politics” (p. 121) -- has taken hold and the book begins to read like an airport page-turner; scorching the eyes with tale after tale of intrigue and deception. But the characters are real (Kissinger, Casey, Brzezinski, Carter, Reagan, the Rockefellers, bin Laden, Clinton, et al) and the events -- which rotate around big oil, terrorism, drug trade, arms deals, covert financing and secret security configurations are heavily documented in the copious footnotes (which I equally read with jaw-dropping fascination).
Highlighted are the adventures of multiple intelligence agencies and their involvement with terrorist organizations that they once backed and helped create, including al Qaeda. At this point Scott’s deep political analysis has a kind of Rimbaudian poetics to it, astutely avoiding moral condemnation. He is just letting the deviant facts speak for themselves.
Already there is material here for numerous Hollywood blockbuster films, but three-quarters of the way through the book, this dark narrative takes off. Enter the reckless American empire of George W. Bush and his neocon administration. With the intelligence of a scholar and the sensitivity of a poet, Scott's description puts forward here evidence that the 9/11 attacks were the zenith of long-standing, but secret, trends that menace the existence of American democracy as an open society. Additionally, he questions why the U.S. trillion dollar defense system failed to protect on 9/11. He also shows through extensive research that there has been a substantial cover-up of the events on 9/11. Here Scott specifically zooms in on suspicious statements and actions made by Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld; before, during and after September 11, 2001. He focuses our attention specifically on the Continuity of Government plan that was called into action that day, outlining Cheney’s secret communications with Rumsfeld and President Bush around 10 a.m.
He further critically examines Philip Zelikow’s 9/11 Commission Report, showing specific examples of the report’s systematic and concerted cover-up; partly by its omissions, but also by it’s cherry picking of evidence to create impressions that are authoritatively disputed (such as the contested time of Cheney’s arrival in the crises bunker). Scott points out a consistent pattern to the cherry picking, which is to minimize Dick Cheney’s responsibility for what happened that day. He carefully dissects Cheney’s orders with respect to a plane approaching Washington, as testified to by then Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta. (pp. 199-200) As a result, Scott asks whether Cheney on 9/11 was occupied in exploiting the attacks as a means to implement an agenda of constitutional revision which he already had in place.
Peter Dale Scott’s major contribution in this book is not merely to our larger, if darker, understanding of world and U.S. history. It is his knowledge of the contemporary importance of the Rumsfeld-Cheney Continuity of Government plans and their relevance to today’s world. Scott maintains that this understanding may be the answer to various questions concerning Dick Cheney’s hazy actions that morning. The hair-raising questions explored here, I hope I need not say, are imperative, as many see an obvious drift of the American nation towards constitutional crisis (see Naomi Wolf’s recent book The End of America, for example).
By examining only the verifiable aspects of the suspicions surrounding the catastrophe of 9/11, Peter Dale Scott shows how America's military expansion in the world, under the banner of 9/11, has been the result of crucial but surreptitious arrangements made by small cliques reactive to the agendas of privileged affluence; agendas resulting in the disbursement of the communal democratic state. Irrefutably, this is an imposing and scrupulous examination of how secrecy and terror is used as political weapons when shifting public authority to an unaccountable prosperity class. As such, I could not put it down and highly recommend it.

The talk of sea level rise should not be in centuries, it should be decades or perhaps even single years.
And coastal regions like New York and Florida are in the front line for devastation.
It is hard to shock journalists and at the same time leave them in awe of the power of nature. A group returning from a helicopter trip flying over, then landing on, the Greenland ice cap at the time of maximum ice melt last month were shaken. One shrugged and said: "It is too late already."
What they were all talking about was the moulins, not one moulin but hundreds, possibly thousands. "Moulin" is a word I had only just become familiar with. It is the name for a giant hole in a glacier through which millions of gallons of melt water cascade through to the rock below. The water has the effect of lubricating the glaciers so they move at three times the rate that they did previously.
Some of these moulins in Greenland are so big that they run on the scale of Niagra Falls. The scientists who accompanied these journalists on the trip were almost as alarmed. That is pretty significant because they are world experts on ice and Greenland in particular. We were visiting Ilulissat, Greenland, once a stronghold of Innuit hunters but now with so little ice that the dog sleds are in danger of falling through even in the depth of winter. But it is not the lack of sea ice that worries scientists and should be of serious concern to the inhabitants of coastal zones across the world. Cities like New York and states like Florida are in the front line.
Scientists know this already, but just to give you some idea of the problem, the Greenland ice cap is melting at such a fast rate it is triggering earthquakes as pieces of ice several cubic kilometres in size break up.
Scientists say the acceleration of melting and subsequent speeding up of giant glaciers could be catastrophic in terms of sea level rise and make previous predictions published this year by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) far too low. The glacier at Ilulissat, which it is believed spawned the iceberg which sank the Titantic, is now flowing three times faster into the sea than it was 10 years ago.
Robert Correll, chairman of the Artic Climate Impact Assessment, from Washington told me:"We have seen a massive acceleration of the speed with which these glaciers are moving into the sea. The ice is moving at 2 metres an hour on a front five kilometres long and 1,500 metres deep. "That means that this one glacier puts enough fresh water into the sea in one day to provide drinking water for a city the size New York or London for a year."
Professor Correll, who is also director of the global change programme at the Heinz Centre in Washington said the estimates of sea level rise in the IPCC report in February had been "conservative" and based on data two years old. The range of rise this century had been predicted to be 20 to 60 centimetres, but would be the upper end of this range at a minimum and some now believed it could be two metres. This would have catastrophic effects for European and US coastlines.
He said newly invented ice penetrating radar showed that the melt water was pouring through to the bottom of the glacier creating a melt water lake 500 metres deep causing the glacier "to float on land. "These melt water rivers are lubricating the glacier, like applying oil to a surface and causing it to slide into the sea. It is causing a massive acceleration which could be catastrophic."
The glacier is now moving at 15 kilometres a year into the sea although in periodic surges it moves even faster. He has seen a surge, which he had measured as moving five kilometres in 90 minutes - an extraordinary event.
If all of Greenland melts, something we were previously assured would take thousands of years, but now could be hundreds, then sea level round the world would rise seven metres. That is without any contribution from the Antarctic, the glaciers of Alaska, the Rockies, the Himalayas, or the ocean water expanding as it warms.
So the talk of sea level rise should not be in centuries, it should be decades or perhaps even single years. For 10,000 years, during all of human civilisation sea level remained stable leading us to believe that coastlines remained roughly in the same place. A century ago the sea began to rise one millimetre a year, 20 years ago it had reached two millimetres and this century it has risen to 3 millimetres. This annual rise may not seem much but add hurricane storm surges and high tides and we are soon saying good bye to a lot of coastal settlements - like the Big Apple.
Switch forward a week from the helicopter ride to George W. Bush's meeting of 16 of the biggest greenhouse gas emitters in Washington last month and what do we hear. We hear lots of rhetoric about how, along with terrorism, climate change is the biggest threat to the earth - although the catastrophic sea level rise facing our major coastal cities does not rate a mention.
But instead of decisive political action (as with terrorism) we get suggestions from the President of voluntary cuts in emissions, down to the government of each country, and then next summer another conference to discuss where we have got to - which on past form will be nowhere at all. It did not sound like the much needed change of heart from the President, but just another delaying tactic to tide him over until his term of office ends.
Although it may sound like it, the commentators in Europe are not singling out America for criticism, although it has to be said as often as possible that the US is the world's most profligate nation when it comes to fossil fuel consumption, AND has rejected the only legally binding international agreement that could do something about it. But Europeans are not doing enough either. We need convincing that our own leaders have enough political will to reach the tiny Kyoto targets that are the minimum first step to tackling this problem. The public hears the latest scientists' warnings that an 80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions is needed if we are to stave off catastrophic climate change, yet wait in vain for the policies needed to achieve them.
In my book, protestors wearing George Bush masks are pictured "fiddling while the earth burns." Maybe he is just the lead violinist of the orchestra.
