Editor's Notes:

The war in Iraq has taken a turn for the worse. While Senator Byrd is calling for an exit strategy, as well as Kucinich, the majority in Congress and the controlled mass media insist upon continuing the foreign oil-terror-producing war-occupation policies. The second and third items delve into 9/11 inquiry. There is something really wrong, and the official 9/11 probe is avoiding critical questions about what happened that day. Where was the Air Force on 9/11? Ted Rall wrote: "The notion of a hijacked passenger jet meandering over the northeastern United States, unmolested for more than an hour before blasting away a chunk of the Pentagon, should appall anyone whose taxes contributed to the quarter of a trillion dollars spent on defense that year."

Yet one strange event can lead to another. Item 4 is on a report by Maureen Farrell on ‘why three out of four experts predict a terrorist attack by November.' If not investigating conspiracy theories, one is not looking at the evidence. Why, as of Feb. 5, 2004, was CBS News still reporting that one of the hijackers' passports was "found on the street minutes after the plane he was aboard crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center." It makes the world trade center attacks appear like some bizarre movie scene, yet with the lives of innocent people in the balance, and our democracy. And while on the dangerous ground of concern for the hijacking of election 2004, the second part of this item links to an article showing how John Kerry's foreign policy statements is not like Bush, but more like that of Richard Nixon. However, I'd rather deal with the falsehoods of Nixon or Kerry than that of George W. Bush any day, and the final item lists points that explain why.

The true leader for the democratic arm of the Democratic Party, Dennis Kucinich, will be interviewed on Air America Radio on April 9. The interview will be broadcast Friday on "Majority Report with Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder " at some point during the 10:00 pm hour of the show, and will be streaming online only during the 10:00 pm ET hour (7:00 pm PT).

FYI - April 8th marks the one-year anniversary of the introduction of the Department of Peace legislation (H.R. 1673) into the U.S. House of Representatives.

Kucinich has called upon the Democratic Party and its presumptive nominee Sen. John Kerry to take a position "in favor of saving American lives and join me in calling for a U.S. withdrawal" from Iraq. "How many more American lives have to be lost before the leaders of the Democratic Party are willing to acknowledge that this war and this occupation are a disaster?" Kucinich asked. "The Administration took us to war on claims that have been proven to be lies and exaggerations, but the ever-mounting losses of life and the prospect of ever-escalating violence are deadly real and can no longer be ignored."

Please contact Senator Kerry in support of stopping the war for oil, domination, and for reasons that go beyond my understanding, but which are destabilizing prospects for peace, cooperation, and survival. We need a united peace effort to confront this war for terror and exploitation.

...It is staggeringly clear that the Administration did not understand the consequences of invading Iraq a year ago, and it is staggeringly clear that the Administration has no effective plan to cope with the aftermath of the war and the functional collapse of Iraq. It is time -- past time -- for the President to remedy that omission and to level with the American people about the magnitude of mistakes made and lessons learned. By Ted Rall

The Real Question on 9-11

NEW YORK--George W. Bush, writes former counterterrorism chief Richard Clarke, "failed to act prior to September 11 on the threat from Al Qaeda despite repeated warnings and then harvested a political windfall for taking obvious yet insufficient steps after the attacks." That incendiary charge, coupled with his apologetic testimony before the commission investigating the attacks, has reignited a long-simmering debate: What did Bush know when and how quickly should he have done something about it?

But both the 9/11 commission and liberal opponents of the Bush Administration are focusing on the wrong question. Nothing has surfaced from the 2001 "summer of threat" beyond a bunch of vague they're-up-to-something caveats. The specific details intelligence agencies would have needed to stop the attacks before they happened--potential hijackers' names, dates and times, targets--were maddeningly elusive.

The really big unanswered question of September 11, 2001 is this: Once it became obvious that at least four passenger jets had been hijacked--at one point that Tuesday morning, Clarke says the FAA thought it had as many as "eleven aircraft off course or out of communications"--why didn't our government intercept them?

..The notion of a hijacked passenger jet meandering over the northeastern United States, unmolested for more than an hour before blasting away a chunk of the Pentagon, should appall anyone whose taxes contributed to the quarter of a trillion dollars spent on defense that year. And if you stop and think about it, there was actually two hours in which something could have been done.

Fifteen minutes after taking off from Boston at 7:58 am, American Airlines flight attendant Madeline Sweeney telephoned a flight services manager back at Logan airport to report that two of her colleagues had been stabbed and a passenger had had his throat cut by Middle Eastern men. "This flight has been hijacked," she concluded, maintaining her professional composure as Los Angeles-bound Flight 11 veered south toward Manhattan. Meanwhile, up in the cockpit, the pilot was frantically clicking his transmission button to tell air traffic controllers what was happening.

They figured it out at 8:13 am. The drama would end nearly two hours later with the crash in Pennsylvania. There was ample time for the airline to notify federal authorities and for the latter to order the Air Force to begin intercepting unresponsive or off-course planes--but slow-witted bureaucrats and years of doing domestic defense on the cheap whittled away precious minutes.

The North American Aerospace Command (NORAD) claims that it received FAA notification by 8:40 am, a dismaying 27 minutes after air traffic controllers determined that hijackings were in progress. According to the New York Times, only a dozen planes, all belonging to the weekend warriors of the Air National Guard, were assigned to protect the continental United States on the morning of 9/11. And not a single one was in the air..

3) 9/11 International Inquiry - Phase One

Conspiracy Theory?
9/11 International Inquiry - Phase One
By Gregor Holland

..According to a growing group of skeptics who have been tracking the investigations and doing their own research the commission is not living up to the job. Indeed some have gone so far as to call it a whitewash. They are beginning to organize an independent investigation of their own. A gathering of hundreds of 9/11 activists met for two and a half days this past weekend at the "International Inquiry Into 9/11 - Phase One" at the Veterans War Memorial Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Participants presented research, screened films, shared information, and strategized methods for informing a public which is only now beginning to become aware of the complex and largely unreported issues and unanswered questions surrounding the events of 9/11.

Presenters included well-known authors, scholars, career activists, as well as amateur researchers who presented detailed examinations into many of the unanswered mysteries surrounding the events of 9/11. A few of these include: the failure to scramble jets to intercept the hijacked airliners, the unprecedented WTC collapse of Building 7 as well as virtual disintegration of the North and South towers, the incredulous appearance of Mohammed Atta's passport on the pile of WTC rubble after an explosion that disintegrated everything else, the strange behavior of George Bush and his secret service on that day, including a failure to assume that Bush was in danger during an attack on the nation, the apparent failure of the events to catch the attention of top brass military leaders including the Secretary of Defense and the acting Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the failure to investigate anomalous spikes in 'put' options on American, United and several other stocks in the days before the attacks, the odd meeting between the money-man of the hijackers Mahmoud Ahmed of the Pakistani Intelligence Services and several Washington leaders the morning of 9/11 in Washington, connections between the CIA, the Pakistan Intelligence Service, and the funding of the Taliban and al Quaeda, statements from top officials including Condoleeza Rice immediately after 9/11 that no one ever imagined terrorists would use commercial airliners as missiles, the disappearance of the fuselage, wings, indeed the entire physical body of Flight 77 after striking the Pentagon, the existence prior to 9/11 of plans to invade Afghanistan, and many, many others. At a lunch break on Saturday, participants converged on San Francisco City Hall to hand deliver a letter to Mayor Daly requesting that he investigate statements made by former Mayor Brown that he was warned not to fly on the morning of 9/11.

Included among the presenters were Ellen Mariani, a 9/11 widow who has filed a RICO [Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act] lawsuit against President Bush and other high level members of his administration based upon prior knowledge of 911, along with her attorney Phil Berg, Nafeez Ahmed, author of "The War on Freedom: How and Why America was Attacked", Michel Chossudovsky, author of "War and Globalization: The Truth Behind September 11", Mike Ruppert, publisher of From The Wilderness, Daniel Hopsicker, author of "Welcome to Terrorland", the only detailed investigation into Mohammed Atta and the Venice airfields where Atta and other hijackers trained, Jim Marrs, author of New York Times Bestsellers "Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy" (part of the basis of the Oliver Stone film 'JFK'), and "Rule by Secrecy".

..The activists agreed to converge peacefully and steadfastly on the streets, in homes and meeting places, and at websites worldwide including , the Ellen Mariani website at , and the website of International Inquiry organizer Carol Brouillet at , among many, many others. They resolved to compensate for the silence of a complicit press by 'becoming the press'. The Inquiry continues with Phase II in Toronto in June ( and Phase III under discussion. March 30, 2004.

Will the 2004 Election Be Called Off?
Why Three Out of Four Experts
Predict a Terrorist Attack by November

by Maureen Farrell

On Dec. 31, 2003, New York Times columnist and former Nixon speech writer William Safire offered his standard New Year's predictions. This time, however, one item stood out. In addition to speculating on everything from which country would next "feel the force of U.S. liberation" to who would win the best picture Oscar, Safire predicted that "the 'October surprise' affecting the U.S. election" would be "a major terror attack in the United States."

While such speculation is hardly worth a trip to the duct tape store, when combined with repeated assaults to our democratic process and troublesome assertions from noteworthy sources, it warrants further investigation.

In Nov. 2003, you might recall, Gen. Tommy Franks told Cigar Aficionado magazine that a major terrorist attack (even one that occurred elsewhere in the Western world), would likely result in a suspension of the U.S. Constitution and the installation of a military form of government. "

Right around the same time, former Clinton administration official David Rothkopf made similarly distressing observations. In a Washington Post op-ed entitled, "Terrorist Logic: Disrupt the 2004 Election," he described a meeting in which nearly 75 percent of the professional participants (characterized as "serious people, not prone to hysteria or panic") also foresaw another terrorist attack occurring on American soil before the next election. "Recently, I co-chaired a meeting hosted by CNBC of more than 200 senior business and government executives, many of whom are specialists in security and terrorism related issues," he wrote. "Almost three-quarters of them said it was likely the United States would see a major terrorist strike before the end of 2004."

..The New York Times also reported on the possibility that Al Qaeda would try to "influence the outcome of the election" by striking U.S. oil refineries. "The Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned the Texas oil industry of potential attacks by Al Qaeda on pipelines and refineries near the time of the November presidential election," the Times reported.

..In an article entitled, "When the War Hits Home: U.S. Plans for Martial Law, Tele-Governance and the Suspension of Elections," Madsen and Stanton delved into the more frightening aspects of what might be in store. "One incident, one aircraft hijacked, a 'dirty nuke' set off in a small town, may well prompt the Bush regime, let's say during the election campaign of 2003-2004, to suspend national elections for a year while his government ensures stability," they wrote. "Many closed door meetings have been held on these subjects and the notices for these meetings have been closely monitored by the definitive"

To make matters worse, if martial law is imposed, Air Force General Ralph E. Eberhart will be able to blast through Posse Comitatus and deploy troops to America's streets. Gen. Eberhart, you might recall, is the former Commander of NORAD, which was in charge of protecting America's skies on Sept. 11. But instead of being scrutinized for NORAD's massive failures, he was promoted and now heads the Pentagon's Northern Command. And, as military analyst William M. Arkin explained, "It is only in the case of 'extraordinary' domestic operations that would enable Gen. Eberhart to bring in "intelligence collectors, special operators and even full combat troops" to bear. What kind of situation would have to occur to grant Eberhart "the far-reaching authority that goes with 'extraordinary operations'"? Nothing. He already has that authority.

Which brings us to the inevitable (and most important) question. How primed is the American public to accept suspended elections, martial law, or whatever else the White House decides to "market"?

Consider, for a moment, what an invaluable propaganda conduit the media was during the lead up to war in Iraq -- and just how weird things have become since. Howard Stern insists he was targeted by Clear Channel and the FCC after speaking out against George Bush; former White House Aide Anna Perez (who worked under Condoleezza Rice and served as former first lady Barbara Bush's press secretary) is slated to become chief communications executive for NBC; and MSNBC featured a story entitled, "White House: Bush Misstated Report on Iraq" on its Web site only to have it disappear down the Memory Hole in the course of a few hours.

Moreover, last year's Clear Channel sponsorship of pro-war/pro-Bush rallies was so Orwellian, that former Federal Communications Commissioner Glen Robinson remarked, "I can't say that this violates any of a broadcaster's obligations, but it sounds like borderline manufacturing of the news."

..Need more proof that something is amiss? As of Feb. 5, 2004, CBS News was still reporting that one of the hijackers' passports was "found on the street minutes after the plane he was aboard crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center".. and for far too long, pundits have taken to spreading White House rumors without checking facts --while denying any White House connection once these rumors prove false.

Personally, I don't give much credence to predictions, but when this many people peer into the crystal ball and see Al Qaeda gearing up for our presidential election, I take note -- especially given what's transpired since the last stolen election.

So, what the heck. If others can do it, I can, too. So I'll go out on a limb a make a prediction of my own: If the truth continues to seep out about the way the Bush administration has failed us, suspending the election may be the only way Bush can win.

My darkest fear is that G.W.'s handlers believe this, too.

John Kerry Is Not Like Bush
He's More Like Nixon By J. Stanton
24 March 2004

John Kerry recently chided the incoming Spanish government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero for promising to fulfill a campaign promise to bring back to Spain its troops and support personnel deployed in Iraq. Agence France Press reported that Kerry's view was that if Spain did bring its soldiers home at this point in the US occupation, "it would leave behind a failed state that inevitably would become a haven for terrorists."

With this statement, he seems to have some Richard Nixon in him. On the John Kerry for President website, a section outlines Kerry's plan for Winning the Peace in Post-Saddam Iraq which is eerily similar to phrasing used in Nixon's Cambodia Incursion Address delivered in 1970 to the American people. Nixon indicated that his plans to expand the war while ostensibly bringing US troops home would result in "winning the just peace we all desire". 'Winning the peace' would be a constant refrain of Nixon's as would 'Peace with honor'. The longer the US stays on Iraq, the closer its leaders will come to uttering such phrases.

Why would John Kerry want to prolong the misery of US troops in Iraq and their families here in the US with such a strangely Nixonesqe policy?
